what your family is spending or according to our data in this site ( see household energy consumption page for more details)
Home appliances
Take out appliances that you don’t use or don’t need now from the outlet (blender, coffee makers,
toasters, Radio etc.)
Make sure that you turn off your computer when you don’t need it or use the “energy saving mode” or
“sleep mode” instead of the screen saver (with the new LCD screens this option is redundant). It also
might apply to your TV settings.
Did you know that working computer consume more electricity than very strong light bulb? So make sure
to turn off your computer.
Check the appliances energy consumption rating. It varies from A (most efficient) to G (less
efficient). You can find it on a sticker inside your appliance or at the back. It mainly applies to
large home appliances.
If you have an appliance which its consumption is very inefficient from energy consumption, think of
replacing it
Clean stony appliances (especially coffee makers or water heaters). If you can install stone remover on
your home water line it will save you a lot of money and headaches.
Use wisely your refrigerator or freezer – fill it up to 75% of its volume, narrow the number of times
your open the refrigerator door, and make sure that the insulating rubbers are in tact
Keep the refrigerator 7” from the wall and 4” from the top so the heat can find way to spread.
Make sure that the cooling and freezing temperatures are correct (you simply can play with it and find
the right temperature)
Don’t leave the refrigerator door open for a long time. Many times you open it without specific
purpose. Don’t do that.
Operate your dishwasher with the right program
Make sure your dishwasher is not half empty. Fill it to the right capacity
Take off chargers when you completely charged your mobile phone, iPod or any other electricity consumer
appliance.
Clothes cleaning and drying
When it is nice and warm outside, don’t use your dryer. Hang out the clothes outside and save twice: on
electricity as well as keeping the clothes in good condition. Dryer adds about 7% to your monthly
electricity costs.
Dry separately the synthetic clothes from the cotton ones. There are different drying times for each
one of them
Operate the washing machine or the dryer only when they are in their full capacity or use suitable
programs (many of these appliances have 50% program)
Clean the dryer filter every 5-10 times. Beside saving on electricity, It’ll also extend the life of
your dryer
Buy dryer with moisture sensor. It cost a bit more but it’ll save you plenty of money each time you
operate the dryer as it’ll stop its operation with the right moisture level of your clothes.
Use the right temperature when you wash your clothes. There are many washing powders or fluids today
that can really clean your clothes in lower cleaning temperatures. Boil (190° in your machine) only
when necessary. Using the normal temperature in your machine versus using the boil machine means 40%
difference in your electricity cost on this operation.
Other tips
Save on water. In California 19% of the electricity spending is on water.
Check with your local power company if there are lower rates during the day and plan your consumption
accordingly (for example use dryer or cleaning machine during night)
