  • Purchase the right energy star insulating doors and windows. This will reduce more than 15% of the energy spent when air is moving from your home outside. There are plenty of suitable non expensive doors and windows that will fit to your home without major expense
  • Close any gaps or air leaks. That way your air conditioner will not over work.
    • Replace your regular light bulbs with CFL. They usually use 80% less energy and although cost a bit more, they last 50 times more than the regular light bulb. The savings are both in the energy consumed and also in the overall cost of lighting
  • Clean your filters. That way your heating and cooling systems will work effectively and efficiently to get to the right required temperature. The recommended period is to clean them once a month and major clean every summer and winter. Sometimes it is also advised to simply replace them.
    • Turn off your lights and appliances when you leave the room or don’t use them. Keeping appliances in standby mode consume 40% of the energy they need while they are on. For most of the appliances today, there is no use in keeping them in standby mode.
  • Close refrigerator door or don’t keep it open for too long. It will extend the life of your refrigerator and save you money since the refrigerator engine does not need to work hard to keep the low temperature all the time.
  • Plant a tree on the side of the house that gets the sun heat. This will help cooling your house by 30%. The tree should be with plenty of leafs and make a lot of shade. Since trees also help to reduce the greenhouse effect, you can actually gain twice.
